My .Net 2.0 Configuration utility has gone AWOL.

Usually a machine with .Net 2.0 will have an item .Net 2.0 Configuration either in control panel or in administrative tools.

I have a machine where this is AWOL.  Nothing particularly strange has happened to this machine.  As far as I can remember recent history would be…

  • Install .Net 2.0 on top of working .Net 1.1 + VS2005
  • Sometime later Install .Net 3.0
  • Sometime later Uninstall VS2005 and Install VS2008
  • Sometime later Notice missing utility

I can’t say exactly when it vanished.  Best guess (no real evidence) is that it was there after the .Net 3.0 install.

I have another machine where the config util is still there.  It has very similar recent install history *except* it still has VS2005, which might be a clue.

How can I get it back?

Cheers,
- Richard

Hi Richard

The config tool used to be included in the .NET Redistributable for v1.x, but was moved in .NET 2.0 to the Framework SDK, which gets installed as part of VS05.  So, when VS05 was uninstalled, mscorcfg.msc would have been removed along with the SDK.

Unfortunately, VS08 no longer includes the config tool, now you have to install the Windows SDK to get it.

So to get back the config tool  for .NET2.0/3.0 try the .NET 2.0 SDK.  Or, for .NET 3.5 try the Windows SDK.  (Or use caspol.exe from the command line?)

Cheers

Chris

This machine already has the Windows SDK. .  I tried a complete uninstall/reboot/reinstall.  No change.

I noticed that the SDK I had installed was a bit older than the one you linked to.  Uninstalled what I had, d/l'd and installed the one you linked to.  Still no change - in fact worse.  At least my old one had an mscorcfg.msc file in it - just didn't; work.  The later one does not even install that file. .

I'm gonna try the .Net 2.0 one - although I am slightly wary of what that will do to the VS2008/.Net 2.5 install already on there.  Wish me luck!

I installed the .Net 2.0 SDK as linked to by Chris above.  I did this on top of the Windows and .Net 3.5 SDK that was already installed.

  • The install worked smoothly (I chose not to install the help.  I didn't know if it would affect the 3.5 help, but I didn't want it to)
  • The .Net 2.0 Configuration utility is back in Administrative Tools where I expect it to be.
  • I have not noticed any adverse effect on the VS2008/.net 3.5 code already installed.
  • I have not noticed any adverse effect on the balance of the Windows SDK. (I don't really use it in any significant way on that machine)

Cheers,
- Richard

I've heard an update - via a source at Microsoft - that mscorcfg.msc was removed from the Windows SDK by request from the CLR team.  caspol.exe is stated as offering similar functionality.

I don't see that as a great argument

  • AIUI caspol only supports Code Access Security - mscorcfg had other features
  • There is now no GUI assistance for setting CAS.
